Philips is one of the two biggest lighting manufacturers in the world. Foundations of this company were laid in 1891 when Gerard Philips founded the company for "the production of incandescent lamps and other electrical products” in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Initially the company focused the activity on the lamps with a carbon filament, and on the turn of the centuries became one of the biggest manufacturers in Europe. The impact for the expansion program were new developments in lighting technologies. In 1914 was opened researching laboratory to study physical and chemical phenomena.
